Blog – We Just Saved $1.6 Million!

It isn’t every day when I get the good news that we just saved $1.6 million dollars!

Recently we issued bonds for T. Clay ES, Piney Branch ES, Reagan MS, a PACE West replacement and additions at some overcrowded schools on the eastern end of the county.  Because of our AAA bond rating (the highest a locality can attain) and the fact that we had 14 bidders bidding on the sale of the bonds, we got a terrific interest rate of 3.147 %.  We saved approximately $1.6 million in interest payments and reduced fees. This is the lowest interest rate EVER obtained by the county on a 20 year bond sale!

The savings will free up money to be spent on other planned capital projects and improvements.  I will continue my push for moving up elementary, middle and high schools in the western end of the county.  By being proactive on adding capacity and fighting overcrowding we can avoid the problems of shoving too many students into too few classrooms.

Blog – Math Textbooks

The Math Textbook Adoption Committee will begin meeting on August 2nd to evaluate K – 12 math textbooks and provide recommendations for future use.  We need to make sure that our Math curriculum is rigorous, challenging and goes above and beyond state SOL guidelines to provide our students a solid math foundation.  Good texts are an important part of that process.

This is a huge undertaking and I am grateful for the many parents in the Brentsville district who volunteered their time to serve on the committee.  If you are concerned about math curriculum in our schools, I urge you to give your input to the Textbook Committee.  Look for additional information about committee meetings and the recommendation process by going to the PWCS Math department website.

Blog – Concussion Education

I’m back from Chicago.  This is the week that our schools begin the new state concussion education sessions for those of you with children playing Fall high school sports.  Battlefield High School is hosting the first one (Thurs. July 14, 7 pm).   You can go to any session at any school (it doesn’t have to be your high school).   Most of you know how important this issue is to me personally.   I understand how irritating it can be to get that email saying parents have to be somewhere for something school related but balance that with how important concussion awareness is.   If you think you already know everything about concussions from your sports days but you haven’t been educated in the past year, then you really don’t know.   The medical and science information on concussions has changed by leaps and bounds over the past year.  What your doctor told you even just two years ago doesn’t apply anymore.   Virginia is one of 37 states who’ve passed or are currently in the process of passing concussion law since 2010.  So balance two hours of your time with the health of your child’s brain and the brain wins out.  I’ll be there along with the rest of you.

For more information about concussions, two blogs I like are The Concussion Blog done by an athletic trainer and Sports Concussions.   What you read will change the way you look at this issue.  For more dates of the PWCS sessions, go to the Health and PE section of our school website.

This will be time well spent.

Blog-Ruritans and Our Schools

Had the pleasure last night of meeting with the Ruritans, a group of men and women dedicated to making the Nokesville/Bristow community better.  I was impressed by their relationship with area schools in addition to their other philanthropic activities.  They’ve had a longstanding relationship with Cedar Point ES and more recently T. Clay Wood ES, which is especially fitting since Mr. T. Clay himself is a  member (with a 63 yr. perfect meeting attendance record I was told).  They are expanding this partnership to include Marsteller MS and Nokesville ES.   As I sat there last night, I realized that 3 of the best things my family loves about living here are directly because of the Ruritans’ work:  Nokesville Day, the Tree Lighting and Brunswick Stew Day.  Each of these events is a Must-Do on our family calendar.  Nokesville Day is a family oriented parade/fair that thousands come for, the Tree Lighting is in December with local schools singing,  free hot cocoa and cider and an appearance by Santa and Brunswick Stew Day is in October.   The stew is a secret recipe cooked over open fire…the aroma as it is cooking draws people from miles around.  Old timers are in line 2 hours early just to get the first bowl and those of us who plan ahead bring boxes to fill up with quarts for our freezers.  If you haven’t been to one of the Ruritans’ events, be sure to check them out in the coming year and thank them for all they do to make our community special and for all the dedication they’ve shown to our local schools and students.

New Schools

Went to my son’s lacrosse game tonight.  Had a chance to chat with some Braemar parents excited after their tours of T. Clay Wood ES and Patriot HS. They didn’t sit through the long speeches and I can’t say I blame them.  It is more fun to tour the school and meet the enthusiatic new staff members.  It is great to hear so much enthusiasm about Prince William County Schools.
